Outline Application for 65 Units Submitted at Old Street, Stubbington

Snug have recently submitted an Outline Application for 65 new homes on behalf of Bargate Homes. The scheme, sits between Stubbington and the Meon Valley, and a few hundred metres from the Solent coastline. It is a contemporary, landscape led scheme that will provide a mixture of private and affordable homes for the community.

This scheme has addressed a number of factors. Immediately to the west is the Titchfield Haven National Nature Reserve. This demanded a high quality, landscape led approach involving careful consideration and mitigation to preserve the adjacent ecosystem. This was achieved in close collaboration with Fabrik Landscape Design, coordinating our design proposals with a landscaping strategy to minimise visual and landscape impact, whilst providing the highest quality living environment for future residents and reconciling their desire for views of the Solent. This led to us developing a number of innovative ‘upside down’ house types with first floor balconies and terraces over carports. Providing a scheme with local distinctiveness and harmony with the natural environment was key to the success.

Our proposal was grounded in a comprehensive evaluation of the local vernacular and character. Utilising housing forms and typologies that minimised impact whilst also providing a complementary material palette to both the surrounding urban and natural context helped to ensure a harmonious relationship with the sites setting. Collaboration with Ecologists ensured that the landscape design enhanced the baseline biodiversity, and a variety of initiatives were incorporated into the scheme to ensure an uplift in biodiversity for the site. These included green links, support to existing planting, further planting areas and wildlife mitigation areas. New pedestrian routes are integrated into the site, connecting the two land parcels and new public spaces are proposed within the site, which will allow the once hidden views to the Solent and Isle of Wight are to be opened up and celebrated. This will significantly enhance this part of Stubbington and its connection to its landscape setting creating both a great place to live and tangible enhancements that will benefit the whole community.
